Side Mirror Replacement: Choosing Power, Heated and Signal Mirrors

Updated October 21, 2026 · 4 min read

For a side mirror replacement, first decide whether you need only the glass or the complete assembly, then match every feature your original had: power or manual adjustment, heat, turn signal, puddle light, folding and memory. A mirror that looks right but lacks the correct connector or wiring will leave features dead. This guide explains when glass alone is enough, what each feature means for the part you order, how to compare connectors, the difference between textured black and paint to match housings, and how to install and test the new mirror safely.

Glass Only or Full Assembly

If the housing, mounting base, motor and wiring are fine and only the glass is cracked or missing, replacement glass is usually the cheapest fix. Glass attaches with clips, adhesive or a backing plate, and heated glass has terminals on the back that you reconnect. Protect the painted housing with tape or a cloth before prying anything.

Choose a complete mirror assembly when the housing is broken, the base is cracked, the motor no longer moves the glass, or a built-in signal or light is damaged. Broken or missing glass is a visibility hazard, so fix it before driving any distance. If the glass came loose on its own, check your VIN for a recall.

Match Every Feature Your Mirror Had

Power, heat, signal and memory are separate features, and one does not imply the others. A mirror listed as power may not be heated. Check what your original mirror and door switch actually do before you order.

  • Manual: adjusted by hand or a small lever inside the door
  • Power: small motors move the glass from the door switch
  • Heated: an element behind the glass clears fog and light frost
  • Turn signal: an LED or bulb in the housing or glass
  • Puddle light: a downward lamp that lights the ground by the door
  • Power folding and memory: extra motors, sensors and wiring

Signals, Lights and Wiring

A mirror with a turn signal, puddle light or heater only works if the vehicle already has wiring for that feature. Fitting a signal mirror to a truck that was never wired for one will leave the signal dark. A manual-folding housing cannot be turned into a power-folding one by swapping glass, since power folding needs its own motor and control wiring.

Memory mirrors are linked to the seat and door controls and may contain position sensors, so they are usually different parts from power mirrors that look the same. Mirrors with a camera or blind spot indicator need a part that includes those components.

Towing Mirrors

Towing mirrors are taller or extend outward so you can see past a wide trailer, and they often pair a flat main mirror with a smaller convex section. Check manual or power adjustment, heat, signal, puddle light and folding or telescoping operation just as you would on a standard mirror.

A towing mirror is not automatically a direct swap for a standard mirror. Mounting points and connectors can differ, so confirm the listing covers your exact cab style and trim. If you tow with a heavy duty truck, start from a page such as Ford F250 Super Duty mirrors or Silverado 2500 HD mirrors and read each listing's cab and package notes.

Do Not Choose by Pin Count Alone

Counting terminals in the mirror connector is a good start, but it is not enough. Compare terminal positions, wire colors, connector shape and locking tabs with the plug on the vehicle side. Similar trims can use different connectors for heated, signal, folding and memory versions.

A connector with extra cavities does not mean your door is wired for extra features. Photograph the original plug from both sides before you remove the old mirror, then compare it with the replacement before you open the trim.

Textured Black or Paint to Match

A textured black housing installs without painting and suits work trucks and vehicles with black trim. The grain and shade may not match older trim exactly. A paint to match housing comes smooth and primed, ready for body color paint and clear coat, and paint work can cost more than the mirror itself.

Check whether a listing means primed, paintable or already painted, and compare the cap with the mirror on the other side. Some vehicles use a separate cap over a common black housing.

Safe Removal and Installation

Park on level ground, switch the ignition off and keep the key out of the car while unplugging connectors. Wear eye protection and gloves when handling broken glass, tape over cracked glass first and collect the pieces in a rigid container. If the door contains side airbag wiring or sensors near your work area, disconnect the negative battery cable and follow the manufacturer's wait time.

Hold the mirror from outside as you remove the last nut so it does not hang by its wiring or fall onto the paint. Route wires away from the window glass and regulator, and do not overtighten the studs. Test adjustment, heat, signal, puddle light and folding before you refit the door trim, then aim the mirror before driving.

Ordering the Right Side Mirror

Confirm driver side or passenger side first. In the fitment table, check year, body style, cab or door count and trim, then read the feature list against your original. Look for notes on towing packages, heated glass, signal and memory, and compare the connector photo if one is shown.

Browse all side mirrors or start from a vehicle page such as Ford F150 mirrors, Chevrolet Tahoe mirrors or Ford Escape mirrors. If only the glass broke, see door mirror glass instead. Our fitment help page explains trim and option notes.

Questions drivers ask

Can I replace just the side mirror glass?

Yes, if the housing, base, motor and wiring are undamaged. Replacement glass clips or bonds into the existing housing and is usually the cheapest repair. If the glass is heated, reconnect the heater terminals on the back. Buy a full assembly if anything else is broken.

Will a heated mirror work on a car that did not have one?

Only if the vehicle already has a heated mirror circuit, which usually means a defrost function tied to the mirrors and matching connector terminals. Without that wiring, a heated mirror installs fine but the heater will not work.

Do replacement side mirrors come painted?

Usually not. Most are sold with a textured black finish or a smooth primed cap meant for body color paint. A few listings are prepainted in a specific color. Read the finish description carefully before ordering.

Is a towing mirror a direct replacement for a standard mirror?

Not always. Towing mirrors can use different mounting points and connectors, and some fit only vehicles with a factory tow package. Confirm the listing covers your exact cab style, trim and feature set before buying.
