Fuel pumps are the largest group with 163 listings, followed by 133 fuel tank caps and 119 fuel tanks. You will also find carburetors for older engines, fuel pump relays, fuel filters, fuel level sending units and fuel filler necks. Brands include AC Delco, Dorman, Spectra Premium, Action Crash, DIY Solutions and Airtex. Chevrolet leads the coverage, with the Camaro, Malibu, Corvette, Tahoe, Impala and S10 well represented, along with Ford trucks including the F150, F250 and F250 Super Duty.
Signs of fuel delivery trouble
A failing fuel pump can cause hard starting, stalling, loss of power under load or a whine from the tank area. A clogged fuel filter causes similar symptoms. A fuel gauge that reads wrong or jumps around often points to the sending unit. A loose, worn or incorrect fuel cap can trigger an evaporative emissions code and a check engine light. A rusted filler neck can leak fuel when you fill up, and the smell of raw fuel near the tank should be checked right away.
Choosing parts and working safely
Fuel tanks vary by capacity and, on trucks, by wheelbase and bed length. Fuel pumps are sold as a bare pump, a module with the sending unit or a complete assembly, so check what is included. Match the connector and tank size in the fitment table.
Work in a well ventilated area away from sparks and flames. Relieve fuel pressure before opening any line, disconnect the battery, and keep a fire extinguisher rated for fuel fires nearby. Drain the tank as low as possible before dropping it.
Fuel Delivery questions
How do I know if my fuel pump is failing?
Common signs are long cranking before the engine starts, stalling, sputtering at highway speed and loss of power when climbing hills. A fuel pressure gauge is the best test. Check the fuse and the fuel pump relay first, since they can cause the same no start symptoms.
Can a bad gas cap cause a check engine light?
Yes. The fuel cap seals the evaporative emissions system, and a cap that is loose, cracked or has a worn seal can set an evap leak code. Tighten it until it clicks, and replace it with one listed for your vehicle if the code returns.
Should I replace the fuel filter with the fuel pump?
It is a good idea where your vehicle has a serviceable inline filter, because a clogged filter makes the new pump work harder. Many newer vehicles have the filter built into the pump module inside the tank, so check the listing and your vehicle's layout.
