Air Mass Sensor

An air mass sensor measures the air flowing into the engine so the fuel injection system can match it with fuel. We list 41 air mass sensors from $15 to $247 for 1990-2022 vehicles. Honda leads with the CRV and Accord, followed by the Ford Mustang and F150, Dodge Ram 2500 and Nissan Maxima.

How to spot a bad sensor

The sensor sends an airflow signal that the computer uses for fuel delivery and, on many vehicles, shift timing. A failing or dirty sensor can throw off both.

Look for a check engine light, hard starting, hesitation when you press the gas, rough idle, low power and a drop in fuel economy. A scan tool may show sensor circuit codes or lean and rich codes. Check for intake leaks and a clogged air filter first, since they cause similar readings.

Brands and design

Air mass sensors come from brands such as Hitachi, SKP, Delphi, A1 Cardone, Motorcraft, Denso and Genuine. Some are complete units with the housing, and some are plug-in sensors that fit an existing housing.

Match the connector shape and pin count to your old sensor. Compare the part number stamped on the body. Remanufactured sensors from A1 Cardone are an option for some older vehicles.

Fitment and install

Choose your year, make and model and read the fitment table carefully. Engine size, and sometimes manual or automatic transmission, can change the sensor. Use your VIN when two listings look the same.

Handle the new sensor by its body only. Install it with the flow arrow facing the engine, tighten the screws or clamps, and reconnect the plug. Clear codes and take a short drive to let the computer adjust.

Air Mass Sensor questions

How do I test an air mass sensor?

A scan tool showing live airflow data at idle and under load is the easiest test. Compare the reading with the spec in your service manual.

Will a bad air mass sensor affect shifting?

On many automatic transmissions the computer uses engine load data, so a bad sensor can cause harsh or late shifts along with engine symptoms.

Should I replace the air filter with the air mass sensor?

It is a good idea. A dirty or poorly sealed filter lets dust reach the sensing element and can shorten the life of the new sensor.
