Idle Control Valve

An idle control valve lets a measured amount of air bypass the closed throttle so the engine idles smoothly. We list 40 idle control valves from $13 to $475 for engines from 1982-2005, from Standard Motor Products, Delphi, DIY Solutions and API, with fits for the Chevrolet Corvette, Ram 2500 and Nissan Pathfinder.

What the valve does

When your foot is off the gas, the throttle plate is nearly closed. The engine computer uses the idle control valve, also called an idle air control valve, to adjust bypass air so idle speed stays steady as loads such as the AC compressor, power steering or cold start come and go.

Carbon buildup in the valve or its passage is a common cause of idle problems.

Signs of trouble

Typical symptoms include an idle that surges or hunts, stalling when you stop or turn on the AC, a high idle that will not come down, or a very low idle. Some vehicles set an idle control code.

Cleaning the valve and throttle body passage with throttle body cleaner sometimes fixes the problem. If the motor itself fails, replacement is needed. Also check for vacuum leaks, which cause similar symptoms.

Choosing and fitting

Valves differ by connector shape, terminal count and mounting style. Some listings here have a 4 terminal blade connector with an oblong shape. Many include a gasket or O-ring and instructions.

Match engine size and year in the fitment table, and compare the old valve's part number. On some designs you must not push the pintle in by hand. Follow the instructions, and let the engine relearn idle after installation.

Idle Control Valve questions

Can I clean an idle air control valve instead of replacing it?

Often yes. Carbon buildup is a common cause of idle problems. Clean the valve and passage, then replace the valve if the problem returns or the motor has failed.

Why does my engine stall when I turn on the AC?

A sticking or failed idle control valve may not open enough to handle the extra load. Vacuum leaks and a dirty throttle body can also cause it.

Does a new idle air control valve need a relearn?

Many engines need a short idle relearn after the valve or battery is changed. Follow the procedure for your vehicle. Some engines relearn on their own after a few drive cycles.
