Air Intake
Intake Manifold Runner Valve
An intake manifold runner valve opens and closes flaps inside the intake manifold to change how air flows to each cylinder. We list 30 intake manifold runner valves and motors from $23 to $387 for engines from 2001-2019, from Genuine, Dorman, VDO and Pierburg, with fits for the Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima and BMW X5.

What the runner valve does
Many engines use flaps or valves in the intake runners to change the airflow path. At low engine speed, a longer or narrower path helps torque and smooth running. At high speed, the valves open to let more air in. A motor, vacuum actuator or solenoid moves the flaps on command from the engine computer.
This system goes by several names, including IMRC and intake manifold flap motor.
Signs of a fault
A failed runner control can set a check engine light with an intake runner code, cause a loss of power or poor low speed response, and in some cases a rattle from loose flaps. A seized actuator or broken linkage is common.
Check the connector, vacuum lines and linkage before replacing the actuator. A scan tool can show whether the computer is commanding the valve and whether it responds.
Choosing and fitting
Match the engine, year and position. Listings here include left and lower positions. Check the connector shape, terminal count and mounting style against your old part. Seals and mounting hardware are not included with the parts listed here.
Disconnect the battery before you start. Some actuators need a relearn or calibration with a scan tool after installation, so check the procedure for your engine.
Intake Manifold Runner Valve questions
What does an intake manifold runner control do?
It moves flaps inside the intake to change airflow length or path, improving low speed torque and high speed power. The engine computer controls it.
Can I drive with a bad intake runner valve?
Usually yes in the short term, but you may lose power and fuel economy, and the check engine light will stay on. A loose flap can also be drawn into the engine on some designs, so have it checked.
Does a new runner control motor need programming?
Some do. Certain engines need a relearn with a scan tool after replacement. Check the procedure for your vehicle. Without a relearn, the code may come back even with a new part.
