Back Up Light

A back up light, or reverse light, turns on when you shift into reverse to light the area behind you and warn others. We list 33 back up lights from $3 to $555 for 1967-2022 vehicles. Hyundai leads with the Elantra and Sonata, along with the Chevrolet C10 Pickup and Malibu, Volkswagen Beetle and BMW 323Ci.

When to replace the lamp

Many vehicles house the back up light in the tail light assembly, while some have a separate lamp in the bumper or trunk lid. Replace the lamp when the lens is cracked, cloudy or filled with water, or when mounting tabs are broken.

If the light simply stopped working, check the bulb, fuse and the reverse light switch or transmission range sensor first. A failed bulb is the most common cause, and a new bulb is cheaper than a full lamp.

Side, lens and certification

Lamps are listed by side. Left means the driver side and right means the passenger side on US vehicles. Some listings also name inner, outer and rear positions.

Check the lens color, either clear or red and clear, to match your vehicle. Some lamps include bulbs. Action Crash makes many of these, and some listings are CAPA certified, which means they were tested for fit and finish. TYC, Mopar and AC Delco are also available.

Fitment and install

Pick your vehicle and read the fitment table for trim and body style. Sedans, wagons and hatchbacks of the same model often use different lamps, and some years changed lamp design mid cycle.

Most lamps bolt in from inside the trunk or behind the bumper. Move the bulb sockets to the new lamp if they are not included, and test the light in reverse before refitting trim.

Why is my back up light not working?

Check the bulb first, then the fuse. If both are good, the reverse light switch or transmission range sensor may be at fault.

Which side is the left back up light?

In the US, the left side is the driver side and the right side is the passenger side, viewed from the driver's seat.

Does the back up light come with a bulb?

Some do and some do not. Check the bulbs included note in each listing. If not included, move the old bulbs over if they still work.
