Signs of a bad switch

Common symptoms include cruise that will not turn on, a set or resume button that works only sometimes, cruise that cancels on its own over bumps, and a switch whose backlight has gone out. Buttons and contacts wear from use, and lever switches can break internally. Before replacing the switch, check the fuse and the brake light switch, since a problem there will also stop cruise from working. A scan tool can often show whether the computer sees each button press.

Lever, wheel or combination

Cruise switches are mounted in different places. Some are on a stalk on the steering column. Others are buttons on the steering wheel. Some are combination switches that also handle turn signals, wipers or headlights, listed here as left side combination switches. Colors and finishes, such as gray or black plastic, should match your interior. Compare the connector and the number of buttons with your old switch so all functions carry over.

Fitment and airbag safety

Choose your year, make and model and check the fitment table for trim, since a truck with steering wheel audio controls may use a different switch than a base model. If your switch is on the steering wheel, the airbag usually has to come off. Disconnect the battery and wait the time stated in your service manual before touching the airbag, and keep the airbag face up on the bench. Column stalk switches often need the column covers removed.

Cruise Control Switch questions

How do I know if my cruise control switch is bad?

If cruise does not respond to one or more buttons while the fuse and brake light switch are fine, the switch is a likely cause. A scan tool that shows button inputs can confirm whether the signal reaches the computer.

Do I need to remove the airbag to replace the switch?

Only if the switch is mounted on the steering wheel. In that case, disconnect the battery, wait for the system to discharge as your service manual says, and handle the airbag carefully. Stalk switches usually do not require it.

Is a combination switch the same as a cruise switch?

Not always. A combination switch can include turn signal, wiper and cruise functions in one lever. If your cruise buttons are on that lever, you replace the whole combination switch.
