Where the dimmer switch lives
Older vehicles, such as the Jeep CJ7, often use a floor mounted dimmer that you press with your left foot. Most later vehicles move the job to the steering column, either as a separate switch inside the column or as part of the multifunction stalk that also runs the turn signals.
That is why some listings here mention turn signal functions. Know which design your vehicle has before ordering.
Signs of a failing switch
High beams that will not turn on or off, lights that drop out when you hit a bump, or beams that only work in one position all point to a worn dimmer switch. Floor switches often corrode from water and road salt.
Check bulbs, fuses and the headlight relay first. If the beams work when you jump the circuit at the switch connector, the switch is the likely fault.
Fitting the correct part
Use the fitment table to confirm year, trim and column type, such as tilt or fixed. Compare connector shape and terminal count with your old switch.
For column switches, disconnect the battery and follow the airbag disable steps in your service guide before you work near the steering wheel. Floor switches usually bolt through the floor pan, so clean any rust from the mount before fitting the new one.
Headlight Dimmer Switch questions
Why won't my high beams turn off?
A worn dimmer switch stuck in the high position is a common cause. A failed headlight relay or a module fault can do the same. Test the switch first.
Is the dimmer switch the same as the turn signal switch?
On many newer vehicles the dimmer is built into the multifunction switch with the turn signals. On older vehicles it is separate. Check the listing details for your vehicle.
Do I need to remove the steering wheel to replace a dimmer switch?
Some column mounted switches need the column covers removed and sometimes the wheel. Stalk style switches often come off with only the covers removed. Follow airbag precautions before you start.
