A key that sticks, turns only with jiggling, will not turn at all, or will not come out are common signs. The lock may also turn without starting the vehicle if the switch behind it has failed. Worn keys can add to the problem, so try a spare key first.
On some vehicles a worn lock lets the key be removed in the wrong position, which can drain the battery.
Assemblies vary. Some include the lock cylinder with 2 keys, some add screws and a mounting bracket, and some include the ignition switch. Read the contents so you know whether you will need any extra parts.
A new lock comes with new keys that will not match your door locks. Some owners have the new lock rekeyed to match their existing key.
Many vehicles use keys with a transponder chip for the immobilizer. A new lock may need keys programmed to the vehicle before it will start. Check your owner's manual or a dealer for the procedure.
Match year, trim and transmission in the fitment table. Disconnect the battery and follow the airbag service steps before working on the steering column. Ask a dealer or locksmith if you are unsure which key type you have.
Usually not, unless it is rekeyed. New locks come with their own keys. A locksmith can rekey the cylinder to match your door key. Keep your old keys until the new lock is working.
If your vehicle uses transponder keys, the new keys may need programming to the immobilizer before the engine will start. Check the procedure for your vehicle.
Common causes include a worn key, a worn lock cylinder, or steering wheel lock pressure. Turn the wheel slightly while turning the key, and try a spare key.
