Common camera problems

Typical faults include a black or blue screen in reverse, a foggy or blurry picture, moisture inside the lens, a flickering image and a camera unavailable message. Image problems sometimes come from a dirty lens or a damaged wire rather than the camera.

On trunk lids and tailgates, the harness flexes every time you open them, and wires can break inside the rubber boot. Check the fuse and that harness before you replace the camera.

What comes in the box

Package contents vary. Some cameras include a harness connector, a bracket, a zip tie and an instruction sheet. Others are the camera alone, or a camera with a short pigtail harness. If your old camera's bracket is broken, choose a listing that includes a new one.

The cameras in this group are rear position and weather resistant. Lengths vary widely because some are built into a handle or trim panel while others are small standalone units.

Getting the right fit

Cameras are specific to the vehicle and often to the trim, since screen type and features such as guide lines change the camera used. Check the fitment table for year, model and trim, and compare the part number on your old camera.

Disconnect the battery before unplugging electrical parts. Some vehicles need the camera to be calibrated or set up with a scan tool after installation, so check the service information for your model.

Park Assist Camera questions

Why is my backup camera screen black?

A black screen can come from a blown fuse, a broken wire in the tailgate or trunk harness, a loose connector, a failed camera or a display fault. Check the fuse and wiring first since they are quicker and cheaper to fix.

Can I fix a foggy backup camera?

If the fog is on the outside, cleaning the lens may solve it. If moisture is trapped inside the camera, the seal has failed and the camera usually needs to be replaced.

Does a new backup camera need programming?

Many plug in and work right away. Some vehicles need calibration or setup with a scan tool so guide lines line up correctly. Check the service information for your model before installing.
