Why side markers fail

Side markers get hit by car wash brushes, parking bumps and road debris, so cracked lenses and broken tabs are common. Moisture can also get in and corrode the socket, which makes bulbs flicker or quit.

If the lamp is intact, try a new bulb and clean the socket first. Replace the whole marker when the lens is cracked, the housing is broken or water keeps getting inside.

Position and lens color

Markers are sold by corner, such as front right, front left, rear right and rear left. Front markers usually have amber lenses, and rear markers usually have red lenses. Some listings are 2 piece sets for both sides.

This group also includes mirror-mounted side markers on some models. Bulbs are not included with most markers here, so plan to reuse yours or buy new ones. Check the fitment table for trim and bumper style.

Quick installation

Most side markers clip or screw in from the outside, while some need access behind the bumper or wheel well liner. No drilling is required on the markers in this group.

Push the socket in and twist it until it locks, then check the light works before you finish. A small dab of dielectric grease on the bulb base can help resist corrosion.

Side Marker questions

Are side marker lights required by law?

Side marker lamps are required equipment on vehicles sold in the US, and a broken one can fail a state safety inspection where inspections apply. Replace a damaged marker to keep your vehicle compliant.

Do side markers come with bulbs?

Most markers in this group do not include bulbs. Move your old bulb over if it works, or buy a new one with the correct base and wattage.

Why does my side marker keep burning out?

Moisture in the housing, a corroded socket or a loose connection are the usual causes. A cracked lens lets water in. Replacing the marker and cleaning the socket often fixes repeat failures.
