Diagnosing washer problems

If you hear the pump hum but no fluid sprays, the lines or nozzles may be clogged, frozen or disconnected, or the reservoir is empty. If you hear nothing, the pump, fuse, switch or wiring may be at fault.

With the washer switch on, check for power at the pump connector. If power is present and the pump does not run, the pump has failed. A cracked pump body or leaking seal also leaves the reservoir empty quickly.

Front, rear and grommets

Some vehicles use one pump for the front and rear washers, while others have separate pumps. Listings show the front or rear position. Check the outlet count, connector shape and whether a grommet is included.

The rubber grommet seals the pump into the reservoir. Reusing an old, hard grommet often causes leaks, so fit a new one. Some pumps are universal fit and others are specific to your vehicle.

Replacement steps

Drain or nearly empty the reservoir first. On many vehicles you need to remove the wheel liner or splash shield to reach the pump.

Unplug the connector and hose, pull the pump straight out of its grommet and fit the new pump with a little washer fluid or soapy water to help it slide in. Refill, test and check for leaks. Use the fitment table for your year and model.

Washer Pump questions

Why does my washer pump run but nothing sprays?

The fluid line may be disconnected, kinked, frozen or blocked, or the nozzles may be clogged. Check the lines and nozzles before replacing the pump.

Do front and rear washers use separate pumps?

It depends on the vehicle. Some use one pump with two outlets, and others have separate front and rear pumps. Check the position on the listing.

Should I replace the pump grommet?

Yes. An old grommet can harden and leak. Many pumps include a new grommet, but check the package contents and order one separately if needed.
