Signs of a bad wiper switch

Common symptoms include wipers that work only on certain speeds, intermittent settings that do not respond, wipers that will not turn off and a washer button that does nothing even though the pump works.

If the wipers do not work at all, check the fuse and relay first. Then test for power at the motor on each switch setting. Power that drops out on some settings points to the switch.

Matching the switch

Wiper switches can be part of the steering column lever, a dash mounted knob or a separate switch. On many vehicles, the wiper and turn signal functions share a multifunction switch.

Compare the terminal count, connector type and switch style with your old part. Listings show details such as six blade terminals and a male connector. Older Camaro and Corvette models often use dash mounted switches, while later models use column levers.

Installation notes

Disconnect the battery before you start. Dash switches often come out after removing a trim panel or knob. Column switches need the steering column covers removed.

If your vehicle has an airbag, follow the service procedure and wait the time it specifies after disconnecting the battery before working near the steering wheel. Test every wiper speed and the washer before refitting the trim. Confirm your trim and year in the fitment table.

Windshield Wiper Switch questions

How do I know if the wiper switch or motor is bad?

Test for power at the wiper motor on each setting. If power is present but the motor does not run, the motor is bad. If power is missing, check the switch.

Is the wiper switch part of the turn signal lever?

On many vehicles, yes. The combined multifunction switch controls signals, wipers and sometimes headlights. On older vehicles it may be a separate dash switch. Match the style you have.

Why do my wipers not turn off?

A faulty switch, a stuck relay or a failed park circuit in the motor can keep wipers running. Check the switch and relay first. A failed park circuit usually needs a new motor.
