Bumper Reinforcement
A bumper reinforcement is the structural bar behind the bumper cover that takes the main force of a collision. We list 30 bumper reinforcements from $58 to $243 for 2001-2020 vehicles, all from Action Crash. Every top fit is a Chevrolet: the Impala, Equinox, Malibu and Camaro, with front and rear bars.

Role of the reinforcement
The reinforcement, sometimes called the impact bar, bolts to the frame rails or crush cans. In a crash it spreads force across the front or rear structure. The foam absorber sits in front of it, and the bumper cover sits over both.
If the bar is bent, cracked, kinked or pushed back after an impact, it should be replaced. A damaged bar will not protect the vehicle properly in a second collision, and it can throw off the fit of the bumper cover and lights.
Front or rear
Our listings cover front and rear reinforcements. Check the mounting points, length and shape against your old bar. Some vehicles use different bars depending on trim, engine or tow package.
While the bumper is apart, inspect the absorber, brackets and mounting bolts too. Collision repairs often replace these parts together. Rusted bolts on the frame rails should be replaced rather than reused.
Fitment and install
Use the vehicle selector and read the fitment table for body style and trim. Compare the old part's shape and any stamped number.
The bumper cover and absorber come off first. Support the reinforcement before removing the last bolts, since it can be heavy. Torque the new bolts to spec. If the frame rails or crush cans are bent, the vehicle needs a frame check at a collision shop.
Bumper Reinforcement questions
Do I need to replace the bumper reinforcement after a crash?
If it is bent, kinked or cracked, yes. A damaged reinforcement will not absorb a second impact properly.
Is the bumper reinforcement the same as the bumper?
It is part of the bumper system. The reinforcement is the hidden structural bar, while the bumper cover is the painted shell you see.
Can I drive without a bumper reinforcement?
It is not recommended. Without it, even a minor collision can damage the radiator, frame rails or body behind the bumper.
