Why handles break
Most release handles are plastic, and they crack or snap after years of pulls and cabin heat. A broken handle may still pull the cable partway, or not at all, leaving you unable to open the hood.
If the handle moves but nothing happens, the problem may be the cable rather than the handle. Look at the cable end where it hooks into the handle.
Handle only or with cable
Some listings are the handle alone and some include the cable. If your cable is in good shape, a handle is a quick and low cost repair. If the cable is frayed or stiff, buying the pair saves a second job.
Match the handle shape, length and mounting style for your model and year. Mounting hardware is not included with the handles listed here.
Fitting tips
Many handles mount under the dash near the driver's left knee or on the kick panel. Remove the trim panel if needed, unhook the cable end from the old handle, and connect it to the new one.
Check that the cable is seated in its slot and that the handle snaps or bolts firmly into place. Test the release before closing up the trim.
Hood Release Handle questions
Can I replace the hood release handle without the cable?
Yes, if the cable is in good condition. Unhook the cable end from the old handle, fit it to the new one, and mount the handle in place.
Where is the hood release handle on most vehicles?
It is usually under the dash on the driver's side, near the kick panel or the parking brake. On some European cars it sits low on the left side of the footwell.
Does the handle come with screws?
The handles listed here do not include mounting hardware. Reuse your existing screws or clips. If a screw hole in the dash panel is stripped, a slightly larger screw of the same type may hold.
