When you need a new bracket

Plastic brackets crack from minor bumps, car washes and sun exposure, and metal brackets rust. A broken bracket lets the plate rattle, bend or fall off. Brackets are also often replaced with a new bumper or bumper cover after collision repair.

Some states require a front plate and some do not. If your state requires one and your vehicle has no front mount, a front bracket solves it.

Front or rear

Brackets are shaped for a specific bumper, so match the position, year and trim. Front brackets often mount to the bumper cover with screws or clips, while rear brackets may sit on the bumper or the trunk lid.

Trucks such as the Silverado 1500 can have different bumpers by trim, chrome or painted, so check the fitment table carefully. Compare the mounting holes on your old bracket too.

Fitting tips

Use rust resistant screws to fasten the plate, and do not overtighten them into plastic. Check that the bracket does not block parking sensors, cameras or airflow to the grille.

Make sure the plate light still shines on the rear plate after installation, since many states require the rear plate to be lit at night. Stainless screws resist rust well.

License Plate Bracket questions

Do I need a front license plate bracket?

It depends on your state. Many states require a front plate. Check your state rules, and use a bracket that fits your bumper. Check your bumper style first.

Do license plate brackets come with screws?

Many do not. Check the listing details and have suitable screws ready, ideally stainless steel to resist rust. Plastic brackets need screws that will not strip the holes.

Will a rear bracket fit a front bumper?

Usually not. Front and rear brackets are shaped for their own bumper or panel. Choose the position listed for your vehicle. Check the position before you order.
