Skid Plate
A skid plate or undercar shield covers the underside of your vehicle to protect parts such as the oil pan, transmission and steering gear. Skid plates and splash shields
Heavy steel or aluminum skid plates protect vital parts from rocks, stumps and off-road obstacles. Many factory 4WD trucks and SUVs have them. Plastic splash shields are thinner and mainly keep water, road salt and dirt out of the engine bay while helping airflow.
Both types get torn off or cracked by curbs, snow and debris. A missing shield can let water reach belts and electrical parts.
Find the right position
Positions in this group include engine oil pan, steering gear box, transmission, differential, front center, front left and right, and even the urea tank on some diesel trucks. Each covers a different area, so match the part to what is missing or damaged.
Some listings include mounting hardware or come as a shield and hardware kit. If yours does not, check that your original bolts, clips and push pins are still usable.
Installation and fitment
Most skid plates and shields bolt to existing mounting points under the vehicle. Support the vehicle on jack stands or ramps before working underneath. Heavy steel plates are easier with a helper or a jack to hold them while you start the bolts.
Check the fitment table for drive type, engine and trim, since 2WD and 4WD trucks often use different plates. Replace any stripped clips so the shield does not flap at speed.
Skid Plate questions
Can I drive without an engine splash shield?
You can, but the engine bay will be more exposed to water, salt and dirt, which can shorten the life of belts and electrical parts. Some vehicles also depend on the shield for airflow. Replace it soon.
Do I need skid plates if I do not go off road?
Most paved road drivers only need the factory splash shields. Steel skid plates help most on trucks and SUVs that see trails, rocky roads or deep snow.
What hardware do I need to install a skid plate?
It depends on the listing. Some include mounting hardware, others do not. Plastic shields often use push pins and small bolts, while steel plates use larger bolts. Check the package contents before you start.
