When to replace a step bumper
Rear bumpers take hits from backing into posts, trailers and docks. Bent face bars, crushed brackets and torn steps are common. Rust also eats bumpers in salted regions, especially behind the step pads and at the brackets.
A bent bumper can hide frame damage, so check the frame horns and mounting points after any hard impact.
Choose the right style
Step bumpers vary by finish, such as chrome or painted, and by features. Some have holes for parking sensors, a license plate light or a trailer wiring connector. Match these to your truck so you can transfer everything over.
Check whether the listing is a complete bumper assembly with brackets and step pads or a face bar only. Quality grades in this group include CAPA certified, Platinum Plus, premium and value line.
Fitment and installation
Check the fitment table for year, model, cab, bed length and trim. Heavy duty trucks often use different bumpers than half ton trucks.
A rear bumper is heavy, so use a helper or a floor jack to hold it while you start the bolts. Transfer sensors, lights and wiring carefully. If you use the bumper for towing, follow the ratings stamped on the bumper and never exceed them.

Can I tow with a rear step bumper?
Many step bumpers have a hitch ball hole with a stamped rating. Follow that rating and your truck's limits. For heavy trailers, a frame-mounted receiver hitch is the safer choice.
Will my parking sensors fit the new bumper?
Only if the bumper has sensor holes. Check the listing and photos for sensor provisions, then move your sensors and brackets over during installation.
Does a step bumper come with brackets?
It depends on the listing. Some are complete assemblies with brackets and step pads, while others are the face bar only. Check the description so you know what to reuse.
