What a sunroof seal does
The sunroof seal is the rubber gasket that closes the gap between the glass panel and the roof opening. When the roof is shut, it presses against the panel edge to keep out rain, car wash spray and wind.
Rubber shrinks and hardens with age and sun exposure. Common signs of a worn seal are water drips on the headliner, a damp front carpet, whistling at highway speed and visible cracks or flattened sections. Before you replace the seal, clear the drain tubes at the corners of the sunroof tray, because blocked drains cause many of the same leaks.
Front or rear seal
Several BMW sunroofs use separate seals for the front and rear edges of the panel, and they are not interchangeable. Check the Position field on each listing and compare it with the location of the worn rubber on your car.
Part numbers matter here. Listings show BMW-style numbers such as 54 12 8 165 954 or 54138218001, so if you can read a number on the old seal or find it in a parts diagram for your chassis, match it before you order.
Fitting tips for older BMWs
Many of these cars are 30 or more years old, and body codes changed between model generations. Use the vehicle selector or the fitment table to confirm your year and model, such as a 325is versus a 325e. A VIN check can settle cases where a car was built near a model year change.
Clean the old adhesive and grime from the panel or flange before fitting the new seal. Close the sunroof slowly the first few times to confirm the panel sits flush and the seal is not pinched.
Sunroof Seal questions
How do I know if my sunroof seal or the drains are leaking?
Pour a small amount of water into the sunroof tray with the glass open. If it drains out under the car quickly, the drains are clear and the seal is the likely cause. If water pools or overflows, clean the drain tubes first.
Are front and rear sunroof seals the same part?
Not on most of the BMW models we list. The front and rear seals have different shapes and part numbers. Check the Position on the listing and match the part number from your old seal where you can.
Do you have sunroof seals for the BMW 2002?
Yes. The catalogue includes sunroof seals that fit the BMW 2002, along with later models such as the 320i, 318is and 325 series. Select your exact year to see the seals listed for your car.
