What tail light covers do

A tail light cover is a molded shell or overlay that fits on top of the factory lens. It changes the appearance with a smoke tint, chrome trim, carbon fiber look or a paintable black finish. Solid covers can also shield the lens from small chips.

Covers are cosmetic. They do not replace a cracked or leaking tail light, so if your lens is damaged or full of water, replace the tail light assembly instead.

Styles and mounting

Styles on offer include solid smoke covers, OE style shapes, chrome bezels and carbon fiber patterns. Black paintable covers let you match your body color.

Check the Drilling Required field. Some covers attach with automotive tape and need no drilling, while others use screws through the body or lens surround. Clean the mounting area with an alcohol wipe before applying tape, and fit the covers in mild temperatures so the adhesive bonds well.

Legal and fitment notes

Tinted covers reduce light output, and some states restrict how much a tail light can be darkened. Check your state rules before fitting a smoked cover, and make sure your brake and turn signals are still clearly visible.

Covers are molded to one lens shape, so fitment is specific. Confirm your year, model and body style in the fitment table. A Mustang coupe and a later generation Mustang, for example, use different tail light shapes.

Tail Light Covers questions

Are smoked tail light covers legal?

It depends on your state. Some states prohibit any material that changes the color or reduces the brightness of required lights. Check your state vehicle code before installing tinted covers.

Do tail light covers need drilling?

Some do and some do not. Each listing shows whether drilling is required. Tape-on covers install without holes, while screw-in styles need small mounting holes.

Can I paint black tail light covers?

Covers sold as black or paintable can be painted to match your vehicle. Scuff the surface lightly, use a plastic primer and automotive paint, and keep paint off the lens openings.
