When to replace a tailgate
Replace the tailgate when the outer skin is dented beyond repair, rusted through at the bottom edge, or bent so it no longer latches and seals. A twisted tailgate can also pull the hinges and latches out of line.
On many trucks the bottom seam rusts first because water and dirt collect inside. Look along the lower edge and drain holes when you inspect it. Replacement steel shells are often quicker than cutting and patching a rusted panel.
Shell versus complete unit
Most collision replacement tailgates arrive as a bare steel shell in primer. You transfer the handle, latches, cables, lock and any camera or wiring from your old gate, then paint the new one to match.
Quality levels are listed for each part, such as Premium, Value Line or Platinum Plus. Some aftermarket gates, such as Go Industries designs, are styled differently from the factory part. Read the description so you know what is included and how it looks.
Fitment and safe handling
Tailgate design changes with body style and model year, and options such as a backup camera, power lock or EZ lift assist add mounting points. Compare these with your old gate and use the fitment table for year, trim and bed length.
A steel tailgate is heavy and awkward. Have a helper hold it while you release the support cables and lift it off the hinges, and do the same when fitting the new one.

Does a replacement tailgate come painted?
Most collision replacement tailgates come in black primer and need to be painted to match your truck. Check each listing for its finish before ordering.
Do I need to move the handle and latches to the new tailgate?
Usually yes. Bare shells do not include the handle, latch rods, cables or lock. Transfer them from your old tailgate, or order new ones if they are worn.
Will a Ram 1500 tailgate fit a Ram 2500?
Sometimes, depending on the years and bed style, but not always. Check the fitment table for both the model and year range, and compare camera and lock options.
