Trailer Hitch

A trailer hitch bolts to the frame and gives you a receiver for towing a trailer or mounting a bike rack or cargo carrier. We list 33 hitches from $73 to $355 for 1987-2022 vehicles, mostly from Draw-Tite, plus Westin, Warn and Mopar, with fits for the Chevrolet Silverado, Malibu, Equinox and S10.

Choosing the right capacity

Every hitch has a gross trailer weight rating and a tongue weight rating. Listings show figures such as 3500 or 7000 lbs. Your safe towing limit is the lowest of the hitch rating, the vehicle's towing capacity and the ball mount and ball ratings.

Check your owner's manual for the vehicle's towing capacity. A car like a Malibu has a much lower limit than a Silverado 2500 HD, even if a hitch can be fitted to both.

Front or rear mounting

Most hitches mount at the rear, behind the bumper. Front mount receivers are also available for some trucks and are used for winches, cargo carriers or maneuvering trailers in tight spaces.

Check the receiver size, such as 1.25 or 2 inch, so your ball mount or accessory fits. Most hitches bolt into existing frame holes, but a few installs require drilling or lowering the exhaust or spare tire temporarily.

Fitment and installation

Hitches are designed for a specific frame. Body style, bed length and drive type can change the part, so use the fitment table for your exact vehicle.

Support the vehicle securely, clean rust from the frame threads, and torque every bolt to the hitch maker's spec. You will also need a working trailer wiring harness for lights, and a brake controller for heavier trailers with electric brakes.

Trailer Hitch questions

How much can my hitch tow?

Use the lowest rating among the hitch, ball mount, ball and your vehicle's towing capacity. Your owner's manual lists the vehicle limit. Never exceed the lowest figure, even for short trips.

Do I need to drill to install a trailer hitch?

Most hitches bolt into existing holes in the frame. Some vehicles need drilling or trimming. Check the installation notes on the listing before you start.

Does a trailer hitch include wiring?

Usually not. You need a separate trailer wiring harness to power the trailer lights. Heavier trailers with electric brakes also need a brake controller. Look for a harness listed for your vehicle and your trailer plug type.
