Why replace a wheelhouse molding
Wheelhouse moldings protect the fender edge from stone chips and finish the look of the wheel opening. They get torn by tire contact, cracked in car washes or knocked loose in minor collisions. Clips break and the molding starts to flap at speed.
A loose molding can trap water and dirt against the fender lip, which leads to rust, so replace it once the clips or molding are damaged.
Choosing the right side
Moldings are specific to each corner. Check the position field carefully for front left, front right, rear left or rear right. Left is the driver side and right is the passenger side.
Quality options include new premium replacement parts and reconditioned original equipment. Some moldings come in textured black, while others need paint to match. Trucks such as the Silverado 1500 may use different moldings depending on cab and bed length.
Fitting tips
Remove the old molding by releasing the clips or screws, often from behind the wheel liner. Clean the fender lip and check it for rust.
Replace broken retaining clips with new ones. Line up the molding with the wheel opening and press it into place evenly. Use the fitment table to confirm year, trim and body style before ordering, because trim packages often change the molding shape.
Wheelhouse Molding questions
Is a wheelhouse molding the same as a fender flare?
They are similar. Wheelhouse molding is usually a thinner trim around the opening, while a fender flare extends further out. Check the photos and description.
Do wheelhouse moldings come with clips?
Some do and some do not. If your old clips are broken or brittle, order new ones to hold the molding firmly in place. Clips are low cost and make a big difference to the fit.
Do I need to paint a new wheelhouse molding?
Textured black moldings usually do not need paint. Body color moldings may arrive primed and need painting to match your vehicle. Your paint shop can match the color code from the door jamb label.
