Signs of a broken regulator
Common signs include a window that drops into the door, glass that tilts or moves crooked, grinding or clicking noises when you press the switch and a motor that runs but does not move the glass.
Cable type regulators fail when cables fray or plastic pulleys break. Scissor type regulators wear at the pivots and gear teeth. Either way, the regulator needs to be replaced.
Power, manual or with motor
Regulators come as power units without a motor, power units with a motor already fitted, and manual crank regulators. Listings show the type and contents.
If your old motor works, a regulator alone is less costly. If the motor is weak or the vehicle is older, a regulator with motor assembly saves extra labor. Check the position, as each door uses a specific part, and some SUVs also have a tailgate regulator.
Installation advice
Disconnect the battery for power windows. Remove the door panel and vapor barrier, then secure the glass with tape so it does not fall.
Unbolt the glass from the regulator and remove the regulator through the door access hole. Install the new unit and test it before fitting the panel. Use the fitment table for year, trim and door count, as two door and four door models use different regulators.
Window Regulator questions
Can I replace just the regulator and keep my motor?
Yes, if the motor works well. Choose a regulator sold without a motor and transfer the old motor across. Keep the motor connector clean and dry when you swap it over.
Why did my window fall into the door?
Usually a broken regulator cable or a failed glass clip. The regulator often needs replacing, along with any broken clips. Check the door glass clips and tracks while the panel is off.
Do window regulators come with instructions?
Some listings include installation instructions and some do not. Check the listing details before you order. If none are supplied, a service manual for your model shows the steps and torque values.
