Brake Caliper

A brake caliper squeezes the pads against the rotor when you press the pedal. We list 36 brake calipers from $21 to $282 for 1963-2024 vehicles, in front, rear, left and right positions. The Chevrolet Camaro leads, with options for the Mazda Miata, Volkswagen Atlas, Silverado 1500 and Ford models.

Signs a caliper is failing

Brake fluid pressure pushes the caliper piston out. Seals and slide pins let the caliper release when you let off the pedal.

Common signs include the vehicle pulling to one side when braking, a wheel that is much hotter than the others after a drive, uneven pad wear, a burning smell, fluid leaking at the piston, and a soft pedal. A sticking caliper can drag and wear the pads and rotor quickly. Seized slide pins can cause similar symptoms and are worth checking.

Configuration and pistons

Calipers come unloaded, which is the caliper alone, or semi-loaded, which adds the bracket and hardware. Some listings also include pads. Pick the level that suits your job.

Match the piston count, from one to four pistons, and the piston size to your original. Calipers are side specific, so a front left is different from a front right. Some listings sell a pair for both sides of the axle. Grades include regular and performance, in gray or red finishes.

Install and bleeding

Read the fitment table for brake package and trim, since many vehicles offered more than one caliper size. Compare the old caliper casting number if you can.

Support the vehicle on jack stands. Use new copper washers on banjo fittings, torque bolts to spec, and bleed the brakes after the hydraulic line is opened. Pump the pedal before driving so the pads seat against the rotor.

Brake Caliper questions

Should I replace brake calipers in pairs?

Many technicians replace both calipers on an axle so braking stays even. Replacing one is acceptable if the other is in good condition.

What is a semi-loaded brake caliper?

A semi-loaded caliper comes with the mounting bracket and hardware attached. An unloaded caliper is the caliper body alone.

Do I need to bleed brakes after changing a caliper?

Yes. Disconnecting the brake hose lets air into the system, so bleed that wheel, and the full system if the pedal feels soft.
