Brake Hose

A brake hose is the flexible line that carries brake fluid from the steel lines on the body to the caliper or wheel cylinder. We list 34 brake hoses from $9 to $133 for 1941-2015 vehicles. The Chevrolet Camaro has the most listings, along with the Ford F150 and Escape, Mercedes 380SL, Ram 1500 and Volkswagen Jetta.

Signs of a worn hose

Brake hoses flex every time the suspension moves and the wheels turn. Rubber ages, and the inner lining can collapse even when the outside looks fine.

Look for cracks, bulges, wet spots and chafing on the outer cover. A soft or spongy pedal, a vehicle that pulls to one side, or a brake that stays applied after you release the pedal can all point to a failing hose. A collapsed hose can act like a one way valve and keep a caliper clamped.

Positions and fittings

Brake hoses are position specific. Our listings include front left, front right, rear, rear center, rear lower and rear left outer. Many trucks use a single rear center hose to the axle.

Match the overall length, end fittings and brackets. Listings note whether a bracket is included and whether gaskets come with the hose. Banjo style ends need new sealing washers each time. Brands include Dorman, Raybestos, Centric, AC Delco and API.

Install and bleed

Read the fitment table for drive type and brake system, since 2WD and 4WD trucks often use different hose lengths. Compare the old hose before ordering.

Use a flare nut wrench on the steel line fitting to avoid rounding it. Route the new hose without twists, check clearance with the wheels turned lock to lock, and bleed the brakes after installation.

Brake Hose questions

How often should brake hoses be replaced?

There is no fixed interval for most vehicles. Inspect them at every brake job and replace any that are cracked, swollen, leaking or rubbed.

Should I replace brake hoses in pairs?

Many owners replace both hoses on an axle at once, since they are the same age. It is not required if one side is clearly in good shape.

Do I need to bleed the brakes after changing a brake hose?

Yes. Opening the line lets air in. Bleed that wheel at least, and the full system if the pedal still feels soft.
