Brake Pad Sensor

A brake pad sensor triggers a warning light when your pads wear down to the replacement point. We list 31 brake pad sensors from $4 to $35 for 2000-2023 vehicles. GMC Sierra 1500 and Sierra 2500 HD lead the list, along with Land Rover, BMW, Mercedes, Mini Cooper, Jaguar XJ and Audi Q7.

How the sensor works

Most electronic pad sensors clip into a brake pad and have a wire loop near the friction material. When the pad wears thin, the rotor wears through the loop and the warning light comes on.

Because the sensor wears along with the pad, it is usually replaced each time the pads are changed. A sensor that is cut, cracked or has a damaged wire can also turn on the light even with good pads.

Front, rear and length

Many vehicles have one sensor at the front and one at the rear, usually on one wheel per axle. Our listings name front, rear, rear left and front and rear sets.

Wire length matters, since the sensor must reach the connector without stretching. Listings show lengths such as 7 in, 11 in and 13 in. Match the connector to your original. Brands include AC Delco, Dynamic Friction, Carlson, Power Stop, Raybestos and Centric.

Fitment and install

Pick your vehicle and read the fitment table for trim and brake package. Some trims use sensors and others do not.

Install the sensor in the pad as shown, route the wire through the original clips, and keep it clear of the rotor and tire. Some European vehicles need the service reminder reset with a scan tool or a dash procedure after new pads and sensors go in.

Brake Pad Sensor questions

Do I need a new brake pad sensor with new pads?

On most vehicles, yes. Once a sensor has been worn through or exposed to heat, it should be replaced along with the pads.

Why is my brake pad warning light still on?

The sensor may be damaged or unplugged, or the vehicle may need a service reset. Check the connector and the wire routing first.

Can I drive with a brake pad warning light on?

The light means the pads are near the end of their life. Inspect them soon and replace them, since worn pads can damage the rotors.
