Heater Core

A heater core is a small radiator behind the dash that uses hot engine coolant to warm the cabin. We carry 30 heater cores from $12 to $148 for vehicles from 1963-2019, from APDI, GPD, OSC Automotive and AC Delco, with fits for the Chevrolet Corvette, Ram 1500, Jeep Grand Cherokee and International 4300.

Signs of a failing heater core

A leaking core often shows up as a sweet coolant smell inside the vehicle, a foggy or greasy film on the windshield, damp carpet on the passenger side, and coolant loss with no leak under the hood.

A clogged core gives weak heat or heat only at high engine speed. Before replacing, check the coolant level, thermostat and heater hoses, and try a flush to see if the flow returns.

Materials and construction

Older cores were often copper brass with brass tanks, while many later designs use aluminum. Both appear in this category. Use the same type and design listed for your vehicle so the hoses and mounts line up.

Check whether your vehicle with dual zone or rear heat uses more than one core, and confirm the correct one in the fitment table.

Replacement tips

Many heater core jobs require removing part or all of the dashboard, so plan the time before you start. Some vehicles allow access from the engine side or under the dash.

Flush the cooling system so old debris does not clog the new core. Fill and bleed the system as your service guide describes, since trapped air can cause no heat or overheating. Disconnect the battery if you will work near airbag parts.

Heater Core questions

Can I drive with a leaking heater core?

Short trips are possible, but coolant loss can lead to overheating and the vapor can fog your windshield. Repair it soon and keep an eye on coolant level.

Why is my heater blowing cold air?

Low coolant, a stuck thermostat, a clogged heater core, air in the system or a faulty blend door can all cause it. Check coolant level and thermostat first.

Is an aluminum heater core as good as copper brass?

Both work well when installed in the system they were designed for. Use the type listed for your vehicle and keep the coolant fresh to limit corrosion.
