Flywheel
A flywheel bolts to the crankshaft on manual transmission vehicles, providing the friction surface for the clutch and the ring gear for the starter. We list 32 flywheels from $69 to $819 for 1963-2019 vehicles, led by LUK, Sachs and Rhino Pac, with fits for the Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette and Silverado 1500, and Ford Focus.

When the flywheel needs replacing
Inspect the flywheel whenever the clutch is replaced. Heat cracks, deep scoring, blue hot spots and an uneven surface cause clutch chatter and can shorten the life of a new clutch. A single mass flywheel can often be resurfaced if it is within the minimum thickness. Dual mass flywheels usually cannot be machined and are replaced when worn. Signs of a worn dual mass flywheel include rattling at idle, a clunk on engagement and excessive rotational play.
Single mass or dual mass
A dual mass flywheel has two sections joined by springs that absorb engine vibration before it reaches the transmission. A single mass flywheel is one solid piece. Some vehicles that came with a dual mass flywheel can use a single mass conversion kit, which usually transmits more noise and vibration. Match the flywheel diameter to your clutch: listed diameters range from about 10.969 in to 11.811 in, and some listings name the clutch sizes they suit.
Fitment and installation
Choose your year, make and model and check the fitment table for engine and transmission, including whether the engine is internally or externally balanced. Compare the bolt pattern and ring gear with your old flywheel. Support the vehicle and transmission securely. Clean the crank flange, use new flywheel bolts where the maker specifies them, apply thread locker if required and torque the bolts in a crisscross pattern. Clean the friction surface before fitting the clutch.
Flywheel questions
Should I replace the flywheel with the clutch?
Inspect it every time. Resurface a single mass flywheel if it is in good shape. Replace it if it is cracked, too thin or heat damaged. Dual mass flywheels are usually replaced when worn.
What is a dual mass flywheel?
It has two parts joined by springs and dampers that soak up engine vibration. It makes the drivetrain smoother and quieter, but it costs more and is usually replaced rather than resurfaced.
Do I need new flywheel bolts?
Many makers call for new bolts, especially stretch bolts. Check your service manual and the flywheel instructions. Reusing stretched bolts can let the flywheel come loose.
