Programmers plug into the diagnostic port under the dash and write a new calibration to the engine or transmission computer. Depending on the unit and vehicle, options can include tire size and gear ratio correction for the speedometer, shift firmness and timing, throttle response, rev and speed limiters, and reading or clearing trouble codes. Many units can also save your factory calibration so you can return the vehicle to stock. Features vary by brand and model, so read each listing.
Programmers are built for specific vehicles, model years and engines, and a gas truck and a diesel truck use different units. Pick your year, make and model and check the fitment table for engine. Many programmers lock to one vehicle once used, and must be returned to stock before they can tune another. If your vehicle has to pass emissions testing, look for a CARB Executive Order number for road use in California and states that follow its rules.
Keep the battery charged during programming, or connect a battery maintainer, because a voltage drop during a write can leave the computer unusable. Turn off accessories, follow each screen prompt and do not unplug the cable until the process ends. Save the stock file and store the programmer somewhere safe so you can flash back before a dealer visit or sale. If you upgrade tires or gearing, use the correction settings to keep the speedometer accurate.
Many units marry to the first vehicle they tune. To use it on another vehicle you usually need to return the first one to stock. Check the listing and maker's instructions for the exact rules.
Most programmers save the stock calibration before writing a new one, so you can reload it later. Keep the device and do not delete the saved file.
It depends on the product and your state. Some tunes carry a CARB Executive Order number for road use. Others are listed for off-road use only. Check before you buy if your vehicle must pass emissions tests.
