Engine Wiring Harness

An engine wiring harness is the bundle of wires and connectors that links sensors, injectors, coils and actuators to the engine computer. We carry 5 engine wiring harnesses from $23 to $180 for 1982-2010 vehicles, from AC Delco, Vemo, MSD and Genuine, with fits for the Chevrolet Tahoe, Malibu, S10 and Blazer, and the Volkswagen Jetta.

Signs of harness damage

Heat, vibration and age make insulation brittle, and rodents sometimes chew through wiring. Signs include intermittent faults that come and go with engine temperature or bumps, several unrelated trouble codes at once, sensor readings that drop out, misfires and stalling. Look for cracked or melted insulation near the exhaust, green corrosion in connectors, broken locking tabs and wires rubbed through against brackets.

Full harness or section

Some harnesses cover a large part of the engine, while others are a smaller section or a pigtail for one area, such as an injector or ignition branch. Read the listing description and photos and count the connectors so you know exactly which circuits it replaces. Choose your year, make and model and check the fitment table for engine and transmission, since one model may have several harness versions. Compare the part number tag if your old harness has one.

Installation tips

Disconnect the battery before you start. Label each connector or take photos as you remove the old harness, and route the new one along the same path, away from the exhaust and moving parts. Clip it into every original retainer so it cannot rub. Press each connector until the lock clicks. After installation, clear any stored codes and check for new ones on a test drive.

Engine Wiring Harness questions

Can a damaged wiring harness cause a check engine light?

Yes. A broken or shorted wire can make a sensor read wrong or drop out, which sets codes. Several unrelated codes at once often point to a wiring or ground problem rather than many failed parts.

Should I repair or replace an engine wiring harness?

A single damaged wire can often be repaired with solder and heat shrink. If insulation is brittle along its length, connectors are corroded, or rodents chewed several wires, replacing that harness section is more reliable.

How do I know which harness section I need?

Compare the connectors and routing with the listing photos and description, and check the fitment table for your engine. If your old harness has a part number tag, match it.
