Impulse Sender
An impulse sender is a sensor that sends a pulse signal the engine computer uses to track position or speed, such as crankshaft rotation. We list 30 impulse senders from $14 to $115 for vehicles from 1982-2018, from Genuine, Bosch, Standard Motor Products and Forecast, with fits for the Audi A6 Quattro and TT Quattro, Volkswagen Jetta and BMW X5.

What the sender does
The sender reads teeth or notches on a rotating part and produces a pulse each time one passes. The engine computer counts these pulses to work out engine speed and position, which it needs to time spark and fuel injection. Many European makers use the term impulse sender for this type of sensor.
If the signal stops, the computer may not know the engine is turning, and it will not fire the coils or injectors.
Signs of failure
A failing sender can cause a crank with no start, stalling, especially when hot, a tachometer that drops to zero while driving, misfires, or a check engine light with a position sensor code. The fault is often intermittent at first.
A scan tool that shows engine speed while cranking helps confirm the problem. Check the connector and wiring for oil, damage or corrosion before replacing the sensor.
Choosing the right part
Senders differ by mounting location, connector, pin style and cable length. Some listings note details such as a pin type terminal or an interchange part number, which you can compare with your old sender.
Use the fitment table to confirm the engine code and year, and compare the part number from your original. Disconnect the battery, clean the mounting bore, and route the cable away from hot or moving parts.
Impulse Sender questions
What is an impulse sender on an Audi or VW?
It is a pulse type sensor, commonly the engine speed or crankshaft position sensor, that tells the engine computer how fast and where the engine is turning.
Can a bad impulse sender stop the engine from starting?
Yes. Without its signal, the engine computer may not fire the coils or injectors, so the engine cranks without starting. Check the connector before replacing the sender.
Is an impulse sender sold individually?
Yes. The listings here are sold individually. Check the connector and part number against your old sender before ordering. Some engines use more than one sender, so confirm the location too.
