Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid
A vapor canister vent solenoid controls airflow through the evaporative emission system, which stores fuel vapors so they are not released into the air. We list 32 vent and purge solenoids from $22 to $326 for 1992-2026 vehicles, from Standard Motor Products, AC Delco and Bosch, with fits for the Silverado 1500 and Ford F150.

What the solenoid does
Fuel tanks give off vapor. The EVAP system stores it in a charcoal canister, and the purge solenoid lets the engine draw the vapor in and burn it. The vent solenoid opens to let fresh air into the canister and closes so the system can run leak tests.
A stuck or leaking solenoid sets EVAP codes and turns on the check engine light. It can also cause hard starting after refueling or trouble filling the tank.
Vent versus purge
Vent and purge solenoids look similar but do different jobs and sit in different places. The vent solenoid is usually near the canister by the fuel tank. The purge solenoid is usually in the engine bay.
This category includes both types, so read the product name and part number. Compare hose sizes, hose connector count and terminal count with the part on your vehicle. Some vent solenoids include a filter element.
Diagnosis and replacement
A loose gas cap causes many EVAP codes, so check it first. A scan tool can command the solenoid on and off to test it, and a smoke test finds leaks elsewhere in the system.
Disconnect the battery before unplugging the connector. Replace cracked hoses at the same time. Clear the codes and allow several drive cycles for the system to retest. Check the fitment table for your fuel tank size and engine.
Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid questions
Can a bad vent solenoid make it hard to fill my gas tank?
Yes. If the vent solenoid sticks closed, air cannot escape from the tank and the pump nozzle may keep clicking off while you refuel. Clean any dirt or debris from the vent area as well.
What is the difference between a purge and a vent solenoid?
The purge solenoid lets the engine draw fuel vapor from the canister. The vent solenoid lets fresh air into the canister and seals it for leak testing.
Will a new solenoid clear my EVAP code?
If the solenoid was the cause, the code will clear and stay off after the system retests over a few drive cycles. A smoke test can find other leaks.
