Signs a belt is worn

Most modern belts are multi rib, sometimes called serpentine belts. Older engines often use several V belts, each driving one or two accessories.

Inspect the belt for cracks across the ribs, missing chunks, a glazed shiny surface, and fraying on the edges. A squeal on startup or when you turn the wheel or switch on the AC often means a slipping belt. Many shops also check rib wear with a gauge, since modern belts can wear thin without cracking.

Choosing by position

On engines with several belts, each one is named for what it drives. Our listings cover positions such as air conditioning, alternator, water pump and power steering, accessory drive, main drive and primary.

Match the length, rib count and width to the old belt. Some belts are top cog, which helps them bend around small pulleys. Brands here include Dayco, AC Delco, Gates, Bando and API.

Fitment and install

Pick your vehicle and read the fitment table for engine size and options such as AC, since a missing accessory changes belt length. Note the routing before you remove the old belt, using the diagram under the hood or a photo.

Check the tensioner and idlers while the belt is off. Spin each pulley by hand and replace any that are rough. Install the new belt, confirm every rib sits in its groove, and run the engine to check tracking.

Belts questions

How often should I replace a drive belt?

Follow the interval in your owner manual, and inspect it at each service. Replace it sooner if you see cracks, glazing or rib wear.

Why does my new belt squeal?

A squeal after replacement usually points to low tension, a worn tensioner, a misaligned pulley or a belt that is the wrong length.

What is a top cog belt?

A top cog belt has notches on its back side. This helps it flex around small pulleys and run cooler.
