Camshaft Position Sensor

A camshaft position sensor tells the engine computer where the camshaft is so it can time fuel injection and spark. We carry 32 camshaft position sensors from $14 to $98 for 1993-2025 vehicles. The Chevrolet Camaro has the most listings, with options for the Ford F150, Jeep Wrangler, Volkswagen Passat and Kia Telluride.

Signs of a bad sensor

The sensor reads a toothed wheel or notch on the camshaft or timing gear. The computer combines that signal with the crankshaft position to know which cylinder is on its power stroke.

A failing sensor often sets a check engine light with cam position codes. You may notice hard starting, long cranking, stalling when the engine warms up, rough running or poor acceleration. Some vehicles start and run on the crank sensor alone but in a reduced mode. A timing chain that has stretched can set similar codes, so check that too.

Matching the sensor

Sensors differ by connector shape, terminal count and mounting. Our listings include blade and pin terminals, three and four terminal plugs, and oval and rectangular connectors. Some engines use more than one cam sensor, for example on the right and left banks.

Compare the mounting flange and the length of the tip with your old sensor. Some listings include a mounting bracket. Brands include Autopart Premium, AC Delco, API, Holstein and SKP.

Fitment and install

Read the fitment table for engine size and position, since V6 and V8 engines often use different sensors and locations. Compare part numbers before ordering.

Disconnect the battery and unplug the sensor. Remove the bolt and pull the sensor straight out. Lightly oil the new O-ring and install it fully seated. Clear the codes and test drive to confirm the light stays off.

Camshaft Position Sensor questions

Can a bad camshaft position sensor cause a no start?

On some engines, yes. Others will start using the crank sensor signal but may run poorly and take longer to start.

What is the difference between a cam and crank sensor?

The crank sensor reads crankshaft speed and position. The cam sensor reads camshaft position. The computer uses both to time spark and fuel.

Do I need to relearn anything after replacing a cam sensor?

Most vehicles need no relearn beyond clearing codes. A few require a scan tool procedure, so check the service manual.
