Crankshaft Pulley

A crankshaft pulley drives the accessory belt from the front of the engine, and on many engines it also works as a harmonic balancer that damps crankshaft vibration. We carry 30 crankshaft pulleys from $33 to $441 for 1987-2011 vehicles, mostly from Dorman, with fits for the Honda Accord, Odyssey, Civic and CR-V, Ford Ranger and F150, and Ram 1500.

Signs of a failing pulley

Many crank pulleys have an outer ring bonded to a hub with rubber. As the rubber ages it cracks, and the ring can slip or separate. Signs include a pulley that wobbles at idle, belt squeal or a belt that walks off the pulleys, cracked or bulging rubber between the hub and ring, and a timing mark that no longer lines up. A separated ring can throw the belt and stop the alternator, water pump and power steering.

Choosing the right pulley

Crankshaft pulleys are specific to the engine, so choose your year, make and model and check the fitment table for engine size. On Honda engines, for example, the four-cylinder and V6 versions of the same model use different pulleys. Count the belt grooves and compare the diameter and the keyway with your old part. Check the listing for whether the timing marks are on the new pulley. If your old part came with a new bolt or washer, plan for that too.

Removal and installation

Disconnect the battery and remove the accessory belt. The crank bolt is often very tight, and many engines call for a holder tool so the crankshaft does not turn while you loosen it. Line up the keyway carefully when installing the new pulley and tighten the bolt to the torque in your service manual. Do not hammer the pulley onto the crank. Check the belt and tensioner while you are there and replace them if they are worn.

Crankshaft Pulley questions

What is the difference between a crankshaft pulley and a harmonic balancer?

A crankshaft pulley drives the belts. A harmonic balancer damps crankshaft vibration. On many engines one part does both jobs, with a rubber layer between the hub and the outer ring.

Can I drive with a wobbling crankshaft pulley?

It is not recommended. A wobbling pulley can throw the belt, which stops the alternator and often the water pump. If the outer ring separates it can also damage nearby parts. Replace it soon.

Do I need a special tool to remove a crankshaft pulley?

Often, yes. Many engines need a holder to stop the crank turning and a puller to remove the pulley. Some Honda engines are known for very tight crank bolts that need a dedicated holder.
