Timing Cover

The timing cover encloses the timing chain or gears at the front of the engine and holds the front crankshaft seal. We list 30 timing covers from $27 to $490 for 1972-2015 vehicles, from Dorman, AISIN, DIY Solutions and Genuine, with fits for the Dodge Ram 1500, Ram 2500, Ford Explorer and Toyota models.

When a timing cover needs replacing

A timing cover can crack from impact, overheating or a failed timing component. On some engines the water pump bolts to the cover, and corrosion behind the pump causes coolant leaks into the oil.

Signs include oil or coolant leaking at the front of the engine, milky oil when coolant mixes in, and visible cracks or eroded passages on the cover. A leak only at the crank seal may need just a new seal.

What comes with the cover

Package contents vary. Some covers include a gasket and front seal. Others add sealant, hardware, or a water pump gasket. Positions listed include lower, outer and front, because some engines use more than one cover piece.

Compare the length and shape with your old part, as listings show dimensions such as 12 in or 15.75 in. Dorman and DIY Solutions covers are often aluminum castings designed as direct replacements.

Installation tips

Removing the cover is a large job on many engines and may involve the crank pulley, water pump and accessory brackets. While it is open, inspect the timing chain, guides and tensioner.

Clean all old gasket material, use the specified sealant at the oil pan and head joints, and torque bolts in sequence. Change the oil after the job, especially if coolant was mixing in. Use the fitment table for your engine size.

Timing Cover questions

Can I replace the front crank seal without removing the timing cover?

On many engines, yes. The seal can be pried out and a new one pressed in after removing the crank pulley. Replace the cover only if it is cracked or leaking elsewhere.

Does the timing cover come with a gasket?

Many do. Listings show contents such as timing cover, gasket and seal, or cover with liquid gasket. Check the package contents on the part you choose.

Why is there coolant in my oil near the timing cover?

On engines with the water pump mounted to the timing cover, corrosion or a failed gasket can let coolant into the oil. A pressure test helps confirm the source.
