Exhaust

Exhaust Headers

Exhaust headers replace the factory exhaust manifolds with individual tubes for each cylinder that merge into a collector, which helps the engine push exhaust out. We list 33 exhaust headers from $176 to $1354 for 1977-2022 vehicles, from Pacesetter, Hedman Hedders, BBK, Flowtech and JBA, with fits for the Ford F150, Ram 1500, Chevrolet Blazer and Toyota Tacoma.

Why fit headers

Cast manifolds are compact and cheap to make, but their shared passages restrict flow. Headers give each cylinder its own tube, which can improve exhaust scavenging and power, and many owners like the sound. Headers are also a common replacement when a factory manifold cracks. Results depend on the engine, the rest of the exhaust and the tune, so treat any power claims as the maker's figures.

Materials, coatings and size

Headers here are made from carbon steel, mild steel or stainless steel. Coatings include metallic ceramic, titanium ceramic, black paint and natural finishes. Ceramic coatings resist rust and help hold heat in the tubes. Collector sizes listed run from 2.25 in to 3.0 in, and some match the OEM size so the rest of the exhaust bolts up. Port shape is listed too. Mounting hardware is included with some kits.

Fitment and emissions

Choose your year, make and model and check the fitment table for engine, transmission, drive type and cab style, since 4WD trucks often need different headers. Check whether the header keeps your catalytic converters in the stock location, or whether O2 sensor extensions are needed. If your vehicle must pass emissions tests, look for a CARB Executive Order number. Use new gaskets, and recheck bolt torque after the first few heat cycles.

Exhaust Headers questions

Are aftermarket headers emissions legal?

Some are. In California and states that follow its rules, headers need a CARB Executive Order number for your vehicle to be legal on the road. Check the listing and your state's requirements before buying.

Do I need to retighten header bolts?

Yes, it is common practice. Gaskets and flanges settle as they heat and cool. Recheck the bolts after the first few drives, using the torque value in the header instructions.

What is the difference between headers and exhaust manifolds?

A manifold is usually one cast iron piece with shared passages. Headers use separate tubes for each cylinder that join at a collector, which typically flows better but costs more.
