Cat-back or axle-back

A cat-back system replaces everything from the catalytic converter back, including pipes, mufflers and tips. An axle-back system replaces only the section behind the rear axle, usually the mufflers and tips, so it costs less and is quicker to install. Both leave the converters in place. Systems here come in single and dual layouts, with exits such as single side, dual same side, dual rear same side and split rear.

Sound and materials

Listings rate sound from mild through moderate to aggressive, so pick the level you will enjoy on a long highway drive, not just at startup. Muffler series, such as Flowmaster Super 40, Super 50 and 80 Series Crossflow, affect tone and volume. Materials include T-304 stainless steel, other stainless grades and aluminized steel, with stainless lasting longer in salty climates. Tailpipe diameters listed range from 2.5 in to 4 in.

Fitment and local rules

Choose your year, make and model and check the fitment table for engine, cab and bed length on the Silverado, and body style on the Camaro and Corvette. Some systems fit only certain bumpers or factory exhaust layouts. Check your state and local noise rules before choosing an aggressive system. Let the exhaust cool, support the vehicle on stands, assemble loosely and align the tips before tightening every clamp.

Exhaust System questions

What is the difference between cat-back and axle-back?

A cat-back system replaces all the exhaust behind the catalytic converter. An axle-back replaces only the parts behind the rear axle, usually the mufflers and tips. Cat-back systems change more of the system and usually cost more.

Will a cat-back exhaust affect emissions?

A cat-back system leaves the catalytic converters and O2 sensors in place, so it typically does not alter the emissions equipment. Noise rules still apply, so check your state's limits.

How loud is an aggressive exhaust system?

Aggressive systems are noticeably louder, especially under acceleration, and some drone at highway speeds. If you drive long distances, a mild or moderate system may be more comfortable.
