Exhaust

Intermediate Pipe

An intermediate pipe connects the front of the exhaust system, often the catalytic converter, to the muffler. We list 31 intermediate pipes from $14 to $229 for vehicles from 1986-2018, from Walker, Bosal and Dynomax, with fits for the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet C1500, Toyota Tacoma and Ram 2500.

Why intermediate pipes fail

The middle of the exhaust collects condensation, especially on vehicles driven short distances, so pipes rust from the inside out. Road salt attacks the outside. Hangers can break and let the pipe sag or rattle.

Signs include a louder exhaust, a rumble or hiss under the vehicle, exhaust smell in the cabin, and rattling heat shields. A rusted pipe can also break and drag.

Choosing the right pipe

Positions here include center, left and right, since dual exhaust and some V engines use more than one intermediate pipe. Direct-fit pipes follow the factory bends and mounting points, so they bolt in without cutting.

Listings show details such as aluminized steel construction, gasket included or not, and whether inlet sizes are given as inside or outside diameter. Match these to your system and check the fitment table for engine, cab and wheelbase.

Install tips

Let the exhaust cool fully and support the vehicle on jack stands. Soak bolts with penetrating oil, and expect to cut or replace rusted fasteners and clamps.

Use new gaskets and hangers where the old ones are worn. Fit everything loosely, align the system so nothing touches the body or frame, then tighten from front to back. Check for leaks with the engine running.

Intermediate Pipe questions

What is an intermediate exhaust pipe?

It is the section between the front pipe or catalytic converter and the muffler. Some vehicles also call it a mid pipe or resonator pipe.

Does an intermediate pipe come with gaskets?

Some listings include a gasket and some do not. Check the details and order new gaskets and hardware if needed. Old gaskets rarely seal well after removal.

What does direct-fit mean for exhaust pipes?

Direct-fit pipes match the factory shape and hangers, so they bolt in place without bending or welding. That makes them a good choice for driveway repairs with basic hand tools.
