Signs your antenna needs work

Poor reception, static on stations that used to come in clearly, and a mast that is bent or broken are the most common signs. On a power antenna, you may hear the motor run but the mast does not move, or the mast may stay up when the radio is off.

A power antenna that grinds usually has a broken drive cable inside. Some owners replace just the mast, while others replace the whole assembly if the motor has failed.

Types of antennas

Power antennas raise and lower with the radio, while fixed antennas stay in place. Some mount on the fender and some sit in a rear compartment or on the roof. Our listings note the operation type and finish, such as black, stainless steel or silver.

Metra makes many universal or replacement units, and we also carry Genuine, Crown Automotive, SKP and AC Delco antennas. Specific fit antennas match the factory mounting and connector. Universal ones may need small changes.

Fitment and install

Pick your vehicle and check the fitment table for body style, since coupes and sedans can mount the antenna in different spots. Compare the cable length and connector end to the old unit.

Power antenna installs usually mean removing a fender liner or trunk trim. Disconnect the battery before unplugging the motor. Route the new cable along the factory path and seal the mounting grommet so water stays out.

Antenna questions

Can I replace only the mast on a power antenna?

Often yes, if the motor still runs. Replacement masts include the toothed cable that feeds into the motor. If the motor is dead, replace the full assembly.

Why does my power antenna not go up?

Common causes include a broken mast cable, a blown fuse, a failed motor or a bad relay. Listen for the motor when you turn on the radio.

Will a universal antenna fit my car?

A universal antenna can fit many vehicles, but you may need an adapter or to adjust the mount. A specific fit antenna is designed for your model.
