Fuel Filter
A fuel filter traps rust, dirt and debris before they reach the injectors or carburetor. We list 33 fuel filters from $5 to $204 for vehicles from 1965-2023, from brands including AC Delco, WIX, Motorcraft and Bosch, with fits for the Chevrolet Corvette, Ram 2500 and BMW X5.

What the fuel filter protects
Fuel injectors have very small openings, and a fuel pump works harder when it has to pull or push through a blocked filter. The filter catches particles from the tank and fuel supply so they never reach the engine. Diesel trucks such as the Ram 2500 and Silverado 2500 HD use filters that also separate water from fuel.
Filter media in this category includes cellulose, enhanced cellulose, synthetic, synthetic blend and microglass. Each listing shows the media type.
Signs your filter is clogged
A restricted filter can cause hesitation under load, loss of power at highway speed, hard starting, rough running or stalling. Symptoms usually get worse when the engine needs more fuel, such as when climbing a hill or towing.
Many late model gas cars have a filter built into the in-tank pump module and no separate service filter. Check your owner's manual or the fitment table to see whether your vehicle has a serviceable inline or frame mounted filter, and follow the maker's replacement interval.
Picking and installing the right filter
Fuel filters are specific to the vehicle, so check engine size, fuel type and year in the fitment table. Gas and diesel filters are not interchangeable. Compare the fittings and flow direction arrow with your old filter.
Relieve fuel pressure before you disconnect any line, wear eye protection, and have a rag ready for spills. Use new clips or O-rings where supplied. After install, cycle the key a few times to build pressure and check for leaks. Diesel filters may need priming to remove air.
Fuel Filter questions
How often should I change my fuel filter?
Intervals vary widely by vehicle. Some older cars call for a new filter every 30,000 miles or so, while diesels often need more frequent changes. Follow the schedule in your owner's manual.
Does my car have a replaceable fuel filter?
Many newer gas vehicles have the filter inside the fuel pump module in the tank. If no separate filter appears for your vehicle in the selector, it likely uses a lifetime or in-tank design.
What does the arrow on a fuel filter mean?
The arrow shows the direction of fuel flow. It should point toward the engine. Installing a filter backward can restrict flow and push trapped debris toward the injectors.
