Fuel Level Sending Unit

A fuel level sending unit reads how much fuel is in the tank and sends that signal to your gauge. We list 32 sending units from $32 to $190 for vehicles from 1960-2018, from brands such as AC Delco, TRQ, Dorman and APA/URO Parts, including fits for the Chevrolet Malibu and Equinox.

How the sending unit works

Most sending units use a float on an arm that moves a wiper across a resistor. As the fuel level drops, the resistance changes and the gauge moves. On many newer vehicles the sender is part of the fuel pump module, while older vehicles often have a separate sender in the tank.

Some vehicles use two senders, one on the left and one on the right, which is why left and right positions appear in this category.

Signs of a bad sender

A gauge that reads empty or full all the time, jumps around, or reads wrong at certain levels often points to a worn resistor track or a stuck float. A sunken float that has filled with fuel will read low.

Check the simple things first: the gauge fuse, the ground at the tank and the connector. On many vehicles you can test the sender's resistance with a meter and compare it to the factory empty and full values.

Choosing the correct unit

Check the package contents. Some units include the lock ring, gasket or seal, while others are the sender alone. Some include a wiring harness. The fuel pump is not included with the senders listed here.

Match the position, tank size and year from the fitment table, and compare the old part number. Relieve fuel pressure, work in a ventilated area, disconnect the battery, and replace the tank seal whenever you open the tank.

Fuel Level Sending Unit questions

Why does my fuel gauge read empty when the tank is full?

Common causes are a failed sending unit, a float that has sunk, a broken wire or a bad ground. Test the sender resistance before you replace it to confirm the fault.

Do I have to drop the tank to replace a fuel sending unit?

On many vehicles, yes. Some cars and SUVs have an access panel under the rear seat or in the cargo floor. Check a service guide for your model before you start.

What do left and right mean for fuel senders?

Some vehicles use a saddle tank with two senders, one on each side. Order the position your vehicle needs, shown in the fitment table and listing details.
