Fuel Pump Relay
A fuel pump relay switches power to the fuel pump when the engine computer calls for it. We carry 34 fuel pump relays and related assemblies from $23 to $428 for vehicles from 1985-2022, from Hella, TRQ, GMB and AC Delco, with fits for the Chevrolet S10, Silverado 1500 and Ford F150.

What the relay does
The fuel pump draws more current than the computer can switch directly. The relay uses a small control signal to switch a heavier circuit that runs the pump. When you turn the key on, the relay usually powers the pump for a couple of seconds to build pressure, then keeps it running once the engine starts.
If the relay fails, the pump gets no power even though the pump itself may be fine.
Signs of a bad relay
The classic sign is an engine that cranks but does not start, with no pump sound at key on. A relay can also fail intermittently, causing random stalling that clears after the vehicle sits. Heat often makes the fault worse.
Check the fuel pump fuse first. Some owners swap in an identical relay from another circuit in the fuse box to test it. If the engine then starts, the old relay is the likely cause.
Choosing the right relay
Relays look alike but pin layouts and ratings differ, so match the part number printed on the old relay or use the fitment table for your year and engine. On some vehicles the pump relay is built into a module rather than plugged into the fuse box.
Disconnect the battery before you pull a relay that sits next to live terminals, and press the new relay fully into its socket.
Fuel Pump Relay questions
Where is the fuel pump relay located?
On most vehicles it sits in the underhood fuse and relay box, with its position shown on the lid. Some older vehicles mount it under the dash or on the firewall.
Can I drive with a bad fuel pump relay?
Not reliably. A failing relay can cut fuel without warning and stall the engine, which is unsafe in traffic. Replace it once you confirm the fault.
How do I test a fuel pump relay?
Listen for a click and the pump running at key on, or swap in an identical known good relay. You can also bench test it with a meter and 12 volts across the coil.
