Coil Spring

A coil spring carries the weight of your vehicle and sets its ride height while the shock or strut controls movement. We list 36 coil springs from $30 to $165, mostly from Moog with AC Delco and others, for Chevrolet models including the S10, Camaro, Impala and Corvette.

Signs of worn or broken springs

Springs sag with age, so a vehicle that sits lower at one corner or leans to one side is a common sign. Others include the suspension bottoming out over bumps, a clunk from a broken coil end, uneven tire wear and headlights that aim higher or lower than before. Rust can weaken springs on vehicles from snowy states until a coil breaks. Look for a broken end near the upper or lower seat, which is where they usually snap.

Front, rear and pairs

Listings are marked front, rear, rear left or rear right. Replace springs in pairs on the same axle so both sides sit at the same height and the vehicle handles evenly. Many springs in this category are sold as 2 piece sets. Spring rate and free length can vary by engine, trim, and options such as a heavy-duty or sport suspension, so compare the fitment table and, if possible, the code or tag on your old spring. Spring seats are not included with the listings that say so.

Safe installation

A coil spring holds a lot of stored energy, and releasing it the wrong way can cause serious injury. Use a quality spring compressor rated for the job, or have a shop compress and install the springs. Support the vehicle on jack stands and support the control arm with a jack before removing the shock or lower mount. After new springs are in, check the ride height and get a wheel alignment, since alignment changes when ride height changes.

Coil Spring questions

Should I replace coil springs in pairs?

Yes. Replacing only one spring leaves the two sides at different heights and rates, which affects handling and alignment. Replace both springs on the same axle at the same time.

Do I need an alignment after replacing coil springs?

Yes. New springs usually raise the vehicle back toward its original height, which changes camber and toe. An alignment after installation helps prevent uneven tire wear and pulling.

Can I replace coil springs without a spring compressor?

On some rear setups the spring drops out once the axle is lowered on a jack, but most front springs are under heavy load and need a compressor. If you are unsure, have a shop do it.
