Control Arm Bushing
A control arm bushing is the rubber or polyurethane sleeve that cushions the joint where a control arm mounts to the frame. We list 36 control arm bushings from $10 to $201 for 1967-2015 vehicles, from Moog, Energy Suspension and SKP, with fits for the Chevrolet Camaro and Malibu, BMW 325xi, Subaru Outback and Mini Cooper.

Signs of worn bushings
Worn bushings let the control arm shift, which changes alignment while you drive. Common signs include a clunk over bumps or when braking, steering that feels vague, a shimmy under braking, the vehicle wandering on the highway, and uneven tire wear. Look at the bushings with the vehicle safely supported: cracks, torn rubber, rubber pushed out of the sleeve or an arm that has moved off center all point to replacement.
Rubber or polyurethane
Rubber bushings match the factory feel and absorb more vibration and road noise. Polyurethane bushings, such as those from Energy Suspension, are firmer and hold the arm more precisely, which sharpens steering but can pass more noise and vibration into the cabin. Some poly bushings need grease at install time. Positions vary, such as front lower, front upper, rear lower and front lower rearward, so match the exact location. Some kits include mounting hardware and some come as pairs.
Installation tips
Most rubber bushings are pressed into the control arm, so you need a press or a bushing tool, and some jobs are easier with the arm off the vehicle. If you do not have the tools, a complete control arm with new bushings may be simpler. Tighten pivot bolts with the suspension at ride height to avoid preloading the rubber. Choose your year, make and model, check the fitment table for drive type and trim, and get an alignment after the work.
Control Arm Bushing questions
Can I replace control arm bushings without removing the arm?
Sometimes, with a specialized bushing tool, but many bushings are easier to press with the arm on a bench. Check the procedure for your vehicle. If you lack a press, a complete arm may be faster.
Are polyurethane bushings better than rubber?
They are firmer and last well, which suits performance driving. They also pass more vibration and noise into the cabin. For a factory-like ride, rubber is usually the better choice.
What does a bad control arm bushing sound like?
Most people describe a clunk or knock over bumps, potholes or when braking hard. Some bushings also squeak as the suspension moves, especially in cold or dry weather.
