Pitman Arm
The pitman arm connects the output shaft of the steering gearbox to the steering linkage, turning the gear's rotation into side to side movement. We list 32 pitman arms from $16 to $89 by Moog, Mevotech, AC Delco, TRW and SKP, all for Chevrolet models including Silverado 1500, S10 and Camaro from 1967 to 2006.

What the pitman arm does
On vehicles with a steering gearbox, the gear's sector shaft turns as you move the steering wheel. The pitman arm is splined onto that shaft and swings the center link or drag link, which moves the tie rods and wheels. On many Chevrolet trucks and cars the arm carries a ball stud joint, which wears like any other steering joint.
Signs of a worn pitman arm
Common signs are loose or vague steering, extra play at the steering wheel, wandering on the highway and clunking over bumps. A worn joint can also cause uneven tire wear.
To check it, have a helper rock the steering wheel with the engine off while you watch the joint for movement. Inspect the idler arm, center link and tie rod ends at the same time, since they wear along with the pitman arm.
Choosing and installing
The arms here come coated, and many are pre-greased with a grease fitting, castle nut and cotter pin included. Greasable designs let you add grease during oil changes. Check the fitment table for drive type and steering setup, since 2WD and 4WD trucks can use different arms.
You need a pitman arm puller to remove the old arm from the sector shaft. Tighten the nut to spec, fit a new cotter pin, and get a wheel alignment after the job.
Pitman Arm questions
Do I need an alignment after replacing a pitman arm?
Yes. Changing any steering linkage part can shift the toe setting. An alignment keeps the vehicle tracking straight and prevents uneven tire wear.
What tool do I need to remove a pitman arm?
A pitman arm puller is the standard tool. The arm is pressed tightly onto splines, and hammering can damage the steering gear. Many parts stores rent or loan pullers.
Should I replace the idler arm at the same time?
If the idler arm also shows play, yes. Both parts support the center link on many Chevrolet trucks and wear at similar rates, and doing both at once saves a second alignment.
