Shock Mount

A shock mount holds the shock absorber to the body or frame and isolates road noise with rubber or urethane cushions. We list 33 shock mounts from $7 to $154 by Action Crash, KYB, APA/URO Parts, Dorman and AC Delco, covering Chevrolet Tahoe, Malibu, Ford F150, Jaguar XK8 and Hyundai Elantra.

Signs of a worn mount

A clunk or knock over bumps, especially from one corner, is the most common sign. With the vehicle parked, look for cracked, flattened or missing rubber, a shock that moves inside its mount, rust around the mounting point, or a broken bracket.

A worn mount can make even new shocks feel loose and noisy. Sway bar links and control arm bushings also clunk when worn, so check those during the same inspection.

Many positions to choose from

Shock mounts in this group come in front, rear, upper, front left, rear right and other positions, so read the position carefully. On some vehicles the left and right mounts differ, while on others the same part fits both sides.

Package contents vary too. Many mounts here include mounting hardware, while brackets are not included on most. Check the fitment table for your year, model and drive type, and compare your old part when possible.

Replace with the shocks

Since you have to remove the shock to reach most mounts, replacing worn mounts while installing new shocks saves time. Many shocks come with new bushings, but a separate upper mount or bracket may still be needed if the old one is rusted or torn.

Support the vehicle securely on jack stands. Tighten mount nuts to spec and avoid over-compressing rubber bushings, which can shorten their life.

Shock Mount questions

What causes a clunk over bumps at the rear?

Common causes include worn shock mounts, loose shock bolts, worn sway bar links and failed control arm bushings. Look for movement or damage at each joint while a helper rocks the vehicle.

Should I replace shock mounts when replacing shocks?

If the mounts are cracked, flattened or rusted, yes. The job is already apart, so replacing them adds little time and lets the new shocks work as designed.

Are shock mounts the same as strut mounts?

No. Strut mounts support a strut and often include a bearing that lets the strut turn with steering. Shock mounts only hold a shock absorber in place. Order the part that matches your suspension.
