Sway Bar Bushing

Sway bar bushings hold the stabilizer bar to the frame and let it twist without metal to metal contact. We carry 34 bushings and bushing kits from $7 to $174 for 1969-2019 vehicles, from Energy Suspension, Moog, AC Delco and SKP, with a strong range for the Chevrolet Camaro.

What the bushings do

The sway bar, also called a stabilizer bar, links the left and right suspension to reduce body roll in corners. Bushings clamp the bar to the frame or subframe. They let the bar rotate while absorbing vibration.

Worn bushings let the bar shift in its brackets. Common signs are a clunk or squeak over bumps or speed bumps, more lean in turns, and visible cracks or gaps around the bar. Rubber bushings can also go hard and squeak in cold weather.

Rubber or polyurethane

Listings include rubber bushings and colored polyurethane options, such as the red and black parts from Energy Suspension. Rubber is quieter and closer to the factory feel. Polyurethane is firmer and resists deflection, but it may need grease to stay quiet.

Check the bar diameter as well. Bushings are sized to the bar, and a wrong size will either not clamp properly or not fit the bracket. Some kits include brackets, and some do not, so read the package contents.

Position and fitment

Positions include front to frame, front outer and rear. The front to frame bushings are the most common replacement. Match the position on the listing to the location you are replacing.

Replace bushings in pairs so the bar sits evenly. Use the fitment table to confirm your year, model and suspension package, because some trims use a thicker bar. Lift the vehicle safely on stands and keep the suspension loaded where the factory procedure calls for it when you tighten the brackets.

Sway Bar Bushing questions

What does a bad sway bar bushing sound like?

Usually a dull clunk or a squeak when you go over bumps, driveway ramps or uneven pavement at low speed. The noise often comes from one side and gets worse in cold weather.

Should I replace sway bar links at the same time?

It is worth inspecting them. Links and bushings both cause clunks, and if the links have torn boots or play in the joints, replacing both at once saves a second job.

Do polyurethane sway bar bushings need grease?

Most polyurethane bushings should be greased on the inside where they contact the bar. Use the grease supplied or a recommended synthetic grease to prevent squeaking.
