Automatic Transmission Solenoid
An automatic transmission solenoid is an electrically operated valve that directs fluid to shift gears or control the torque converter. We carry 30 transmission solenoids from $26 to $380 for 1995-2015 vehicles. Dodge and Honda lead, with the Ram 1500 and Civic as top fits, plus options for the Tundra, Grand Caravan and Odyssey.

Signs of a bad solenoid
The transmission computer opens and closes solenoids to send fluid pressure to the clutches and bands. Some control shifts, some control line pressure, and some lock the torque converter.
Common signs include a check engine or transmission light, delayed or harsh shifts, stuck in one gear, skipped gears and slipping. Diagnostic codes often name the solenoid or its circuit. Check fluid level and condition first, as low or burnt fluid causes similar problems.
Picking the right solenoid
Transmissions use several solenoids, and some vehicles group them in a pack or block. Read the code to learn which one has failed, then match it to the listing. Some listings name a position such as right upper.
Check what comes with the part. Our listings include solenoids with gaskets, O-rings and mounting brackets, and some come as a two piece set. Brands include Standard Motor Products, ATP, Mopar, Genuine and Pioneer Cables.
Install and fitment
Read the fitment table for transmission type and engine. The same model often had more than one transmission. Comparing the number on the old solenoid helps confirm.
Some solenoids mount on the outside of the case, while others sit inside the pan on the valve body. If you drop the pan, plan to replace the filter and gasket and refill with the fluid type your transmission specifies. Clear codes and let the transmission relearn shifts after the repair.
Automatic Transmission Solenoid questions
Can a bad shift solenoid cause limp mode?
Yes. When the computer sees a solenoid fault, many transmissions lock into one gear to protect themselves. Fixing the solenoid often restores normal shifting.
Do I have to drop the pan to replace a transmission solenoid?
It depends on the transmission. Some solenoids bolt to the outside of the case, and others are inside the pan on the valve body.
Should I change the transmission fluid when replacing a solenoid?
If you drop the pan, you will lose fluid anyway, so it is a good time to replace the filter and refill with the correct fluid.
